Conversation with Lisa: VNS Surgery

Ava hasn’t had a tonic-clonic in awhile, but we’ll save one for you if it happens. Her seizures have been smaller and able to be intercepted by the VNS magnet, so it’s been quite a while since any big ones.

Lisa, did Ava have VNS surgery?

She did—back in February. It typically improves seizure control with time, so fingers crossed.

Does Dillon warn you in time so that you are able to use your magnet and prevent or minimize a seizure?

Actually Dillon has picked up on seizures before they happen, and that has given us the needed time to preemptively swipe the magnet. That’s a bonus we hadn’t anticipated!!

Since Dillon is now alerting PRIOR TO a seizure, doesn't it seem possible that that, too, is due to a chemical change that produces a recognizable odor? The next time that happens, could you share a piece of clothing? I will use it w/Raya and test it letting HER nose tell us the answer. That way we would know at the very least if the odor is viable - and that Dillon's alerting isn't due to Ava's behavior or some other indicator......It sounds as tho Dillon's pre-seizure alerting is identical to the work of the Diabetic Alert Dogs.

Of course! And it is possible that those pre-seizure alerts might produce some clothing samples, for sure

I think it is entirely possible.

Next time - if there is a next time - please send me something, then.

I will!
